Assessing Morphological Changes of the Msimbazi River Using Satellite Images

This study assessed historical morphology changes of the Msimbazi River in Dar es Salaam City, Tanzania, following heavy rainfall events using Google earth images. The erosion and sedimentation processes that cause morphological a river are also associated with flooding within catchments. In this study, bank-line movement, areas section width were analyzed under three-time periods: 2005- 2012, 2012- 2018, 2018- 2020. Data shows that, timing for floods coincides records rains. It was found area upper reaches such as Kinyerezi suffer from bank most, indicated by large increase width. has resulted into washing away infrastructure including houses loss land. channel at widened lot since 2005, some sections having widths more than 90 m. On lower example around Kigogo Jangwani areas, deposition soil materials prevails, resulting raised bed reduced widths. As an hence carrying capacity is reduced, inundation banks occurs. among causes reported these whenever there storm event. therefore recommended interventions to solve city should include preventing catchment on upstream areas.
